Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the questions that come up when choosing and living with a rug.

Why does a rug look lighter from one end?

The direction of the pile reflects light differently. A rug can look markedly lighter or darker when viewed from opposite ends, especially with lustrous wool or silk. Ask for photographs from both directions and compare the piece in the lighting where it will live.

Is every irregularity a flaw?

No. Slight changes in shape, drawing, or colour can be natural to handwork. Structural weakness, active damage, stains, or excessive distortion should still be disclosed and assessed. “Handmade character” should never replace a clear condition report.

Can an antique rug be used every day?

Many can, if their structure and condition suit the setting. Others are too fragile for heavy traffic. Fibre, foundation, repairs, pile, and placement matter more than age alone. Ask for advice about your specific room rather than relying on a general promise of durability.

Do I need a rug pad?

A suitable pad can improve grip, cushion the rug, and reduce friction. Choose a breathable material compatible with the rug and the floor finish, cut slightly smaller than the rug. Check both the pad supplier’s and floor manufacturer’s guidance.

How do I request a price or discuss a piece?

For a Price Upon Request rug, use Request Pricing on its listing to send an inquiry identifying the piece. Rugs with a listed purchase price follow the checkout flow when available. For questions about condition, dimensions, care, or placement, contact the gallery before purchasing. Sold pieces remain visible for reference but cannot be purchased.
